What is the Difference Between Incandescent and LED Bulbs?

Shopping for light bulbs has become more confusing as the variety of light bulbs continues to grow. LED lighting companies offer energy efficient lighting, while some companies still offer traditional lighting options. So what’s the difference between incandescent bulbs and LED bulbs? Are LED bulbs worth the extra money? Let’s take a look at both products to find out.

Incandescent Light Bulbs

Incandescent bulbs produce light by passing electricity through a filament, heating it to the point that it glows and produces light. These bulbs are cheap and easy to produce; however, the problem is that they are inefficient and don’t last long. Around 98 percent of the energy used to power an incandescent bulb is lost as heat. This has a negative effect both on the environment and your energy bill because it wastes so much energy to produce light. Incandescent bulbs also have a short lifespan; they last around 1,000 to 1,200 hours.

LED Light Bulbs

LED bulbs are based on a semiconductor diode and use energy efficiently. They are the most energy efficient lighting option available through LED lighting companies, using just 6.5 watts to produce a similar amount of light as a standard 60 watt incandescent bulb. They also last much longer; you can expect an LED bulb to last between 25,000 and 50,000 hours. LED bulbs cost more initially, but the saves in energy and replacement costs quickly makes it a good investment. You usually recover the initial expense of purchasing an LED bulb instead of an incandescent one in less than one and a half months.

Types of LED Lighting

LED lighting companies offer LED lighting that comes in a variety of options from floodlights to strip lighting and LED tubes to track lighting and more. With so many LED options, you can find the right match for your light fixtures.
